I once laid off a third of the company I was with.
The company kept me on one extra day so that I could do this…then laid me off the next day.
I then organized a mailing list for those who lost their jobs and gave them copies of my favorite job hunting book, What Color Is Your Parachute.
Back then the new Internet wisdom was “get big fast” and none other than Goldman Sachs had given us tens of millions of dollars and told us to do that. In one year, we grew from 50 to 150. In four months, in two waves of layoffs, that was all undone and we shrank back to 50 people. We thought we were following expert advice. Turns out the advice led us off a cliff.
I laid myself off from this company because for the last year I had been focused on hiring. The company didn’t need the hiring guy (me), so I was out.
I got the next job I could, at another startup, and watched it slowly shrink too. I worked to hold it together for 2.5 years until I was laid off again.
The bottom line is that hard times come and go.
A good leader needs to learn how to live and lead through them.
On Friday, December 8th at 11AM US Pacific Time, I will moderate a free panel on “Leading in Tough Times: Insights for 2024 and Beyond” with three experts.
Over 800 people have registered.
